There are many cherry trees probably blossoming around this time of the year. Spring is in full action during this season. A beautiful cherry blossom area that you may or may not have heard of is in South Korea called Nami Island where the blossoms are usually blossoming from March to May, so if you’d like to see it, it’s not too late to book a flight to see it.
Namiseom Island was formed as a result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam. It is a half moon-shaped isle, and on it is the grave of General Nami, who led a great victory against the rebels in the 13th year of the 7th king of the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejo (reign 1455-1468).
How To Get To Nami Island & Transportation
Namiseom Island is 63 km away from Seoul in the direction of Chuncheon, and is famous for its beautiful tree lined roads. The island is 30 minutes away from Chuncheon and an hour away from the suburbs of Seoul. Since it is not far from Seoul, many couples and families come to visit.
Generally, Nami Island is situated about 90 minutes train-ride away from Seoul, tour bus ride from the Gapyeong station and ferry ride from the terminal. It is certainly worth the travel. The farther you go inside the island, the less people and tourists there will be. There are tram and tour bus going around the island for those who do not like to walk. Bicycle rental is also an option. The short ferry ride to and from the island also allows for some sight-seeing along the coast (ferry ride roughly 30 minutes).
Special Features
A special feature of Namiseom Island is that there are no telephone poles. This is because all electric wires were built underground to keep the natural feeling of the landscape. The island is 553,560 square yards with chestnut trees and poplar trees throughout.
The main focus of Nami Island is how well the place is maintained. I like the beautiful landscaping or how the different trees, grass, and flowers are blended to give you a serene and picture & instagrammable place.
You could even spot animals such as chipmunks and bunnies.
Things To Do
In the middle of the isle, there is a grass field about 316,320 square yards. It features education and training facilities and camping sites. The island also has a swimming pool and water-sports facilities for motorboats and water skiing, as well as a theme park with a merry-go-round, shooting range, and roller skating rink. Lodging facilities such as resort villas and bungalows are available for visitors to stay on the island.
Food & Souvenir
They had different shops offering souvenir items of all kinds/types/sizes, some like the more modern t-shirts, trinkets, toys. And the more traditional ones like hand-carved / wood-crafted items. You won’t get hungry here as there are several shops where you can get food from finger foods to full restaurants.
Something To Note About Nami Island
Not all the shops were open, and there were hardly any person whom tourists can approach if they had questions or concerns. There are maintenance people like gardeners and attendants pruning the grass and cleaning the fields. It would help if they had a couple of people dedicated to helping tourists with any questions or help they needed. Keep in mind, Spring is usually the most busiest season.
Conclusion
Nami Island has the famous trees and it is usually very crowded and packed. It’s a highly visited place and many people usually do not enjoy being in such a crowded overly populated tourist area since it makes it more challenging to sightsee & get what you want to get done; so if that’s you, it’s highly recommended that you get there for sure by noon to be able to have enough time to sightsee and enjoy lunch before the massive crowds arrive by ferry. There are a lot of picturesque areas to take pictures and usually the two best ways to get around is either rent a bike or walk around.
