The artwork is by Jorge Marin from Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico. “Wings of Mexico” is one of the nine art pieces displayed which as a group called “Wings of the City.”

It’s an artwork that is a link of friendship that promotes and strengthens the bonds that exist between different cultures. The interactive nature of the exhibition provides a brilliant opportunity for the community to interact, learn and embrace different cultures. He’s an artist of globalization which let us see that we are similar; we can understand a little of everything and that makes us have more empathy—be in favor of looking for similarities rather than differences. Embracing different cultures is so valuable.
Wings Of Mexico
One of the pieces, “Wings of Mexico” is to engage the entire community. It facilitates the coming together of a community. The sculpture is a pair of bronze wings where people can stand in between and appear as if they might fly. While I was here at the statue for about just 30 minutes, I came across people from at least five different countries such as Korea, Russia, Mexico, Vietnam and Dominican Republican—who came here just to take pictures with the sculpture. There were also many people who live in Sacramento but never knew these sculpture existed until they saw us taking pictures with it, they stopped in their tracks to admire the sculptures and take picture with it too. It definitely created a dialogue and connected people together more.
Having Wings…
For a moment, people can imagine what it feels like to have wings and people could feel like a superhero, man or woman with wings or a bird. Imaginations are limitless and you can be anything your heart desires.
Where To Find The Wings Of The City
You can find these sculptures in downtown Sacramento between 8th and 9th streets and 11th street between J and L streets, near the state capitol which will only be displayed from March 1st until November 2019. It’s temporary here, if you’re in the area, make sure to stop by to admire these sculptures.
Sacramento, the capitol of California, is the 3rd city in California to have these sculptures displayed.
Jorge Marin said his sculptures incorporate elements of both the Baroque and Renaissance periods but with a modern twist.
“I encourage the fact that my work generates a very intimate dialogue with the viewer. A kind of mirror where yourself will end up reflecting on very personal topics: fears, desires, fantasies, joys.”
These wings encourage people to take flight towards their limitless dreams.
